Tommaso Corvi-Mora is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by California-based artist Brian Calvin, the ninth at the gallery. The exhibition will mark twenty-one years of collaboration between the artist and Corvi-Mora and will include three paintings and a group of works on paper.
The works in the exhibition continue the artist’s investigation of form and colour through figuration. All the works depict female heads, isolated or in conversation. The stylised nature of the images and the setting of a theme and its variations create a tension towards abstraction, towards an idea of landscape.
Brian Calvin has exhibited extensively for the last 20 years. Exhibition highlights include: “The Americans. New Art”, Barbican Art Gallery, London (2001); “Dear Painter, Paint Me”, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2002); “Baja To Vancouver: The West Coast in Contemporary Art”, CCA Wattis ICA, San Francisco (2004); “After Cézanne”, MOCA, Los Angeles (2007); “Los Angeles – A Fiction”, Astrup Fernley Museum, Oslo (2016); “Così Fan Tutte”, Gallery Met, Met Opera, New York City (2018) and a survey exhibition at Le Consortium, Dijon and Mu.Zee, Ostende (2015).
